Disney research design engineer Lanny Smoot has devised “holotile,” an elegant VR treadmill. Smoot, who is being inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, says it would let you wander endlessly through VR/AR worlds. Rick Sternbach and I envisioned something similar for Star Trek’s holodeck in the ST:TNG Tech Manual, but Smoot’s invention lets you do it without magic forcefields.
