Special effects (often abbreviated as SFX, SPFX, F/X or simply FX) are illusions or visual tricks used in the theatre, film, television, video game and simulator industries to simulate the imagined events in a story or virtual world.

Special effects are traditionally divided into the categories of mechanical effects and optical effects. With the emergence of digital film-making a distinction between special effects and visual effects has grown, with the latter referring to digital post-production while "special effects" referring to mechanical and optical effects.

Why protect Intellectual Property Rights?

I had the pleasure of working many years ago on Star Trek, TNG with a guy who did all the Graphic Arts for the show, from miniatures to large scale images. Michael Okuda was a genius then in how he could create a miniature (perspective) living futuristic city and give it life by simply blowing a tiny fan on streamers of blue tinsel laid out to look like a shimmering lake.

Of course his talents were not limited by his practical model making but extend far into the realm of CGI as can be evidenced by this little demo reel I came across today!

I just want to say: "Congratulations on a sustained career of excellence, Michael!"
